During these dates, banana and palm trees are also pruned throughout the municipality

Benidorm will plant nearly 400 new trees in places where trees have disappeared due to disease or vandalism

07 February 2025
Benidorm plantará cerca de 400 nuevos árboles en lugares donde hayan desaparecido ejemplares por enfermedad o actos vandálicos

The Department of Parks and Gardens of Benidorm City Council is planting new trees in streets and avenues of the municipality, specifically in those places where sick or dead trees have been detected or others that have been victims of vandalism.

In most of these cases, action is being taken in the tree pits on public roads and the Councillor for Parks and Gardens, José Ramón González de Zárate, has calculated that “between this month and the next two we will plant around 400 trees”. The action began in the area of Alfonso Puchades, where several empty tree pits or damaged trees had been seen. “First we act in the places where the hole has already been made and then in the areas where the trees are in poor condition” the councillor has specified. In these places, the tree will be removed and replaced by another.

In this regard, the councillor has urged the residents of Benidorm to inform us if they are aware of trees in their neighbourhoods or anywhere else that have died or have been the object of vandalism and need to be replaced so that we can act as soon as possible. González de Zárate has emphasised that citizens “demand green areas in the city and the care and maintenance of these because we have more than 35,000 trees in Benidorm”.

On the other hand, the head of Parks and Gardens has reported that last October the pruning work began on the urban trees and that now this work is focused “on the large trees such as the banana trees Mediterráneo Avenue or the palm trees that are throughout the city”.

“It is a very meticulous and technical job, very well done, which consists of removing branches so that they do not fall into the public road and at the same time the tree can recover its vigour and grow with more energy. González de Zárate also revealed that when pruning is carried out, workers come with a machine that shreds the removed material to convert it into small barks and then uses them as fertilizer for plants in other parks. “It is an organic material that we reuse,” the councillor concluded.
