Benidorm City Council has completed the works to improve accessibility in Uruguay Street that had been requested by residents and by the Association of People with Disabilities of Benidorm and the Region (Asmibe), to solve some problems that arose for people with reduced mobility.
The works have had an investment of 48,198.92 euros and a completion period of around one month. Among the problems that have been solved is an improvement in the signage that will prevent vehicles from parking incorrectly and impede access to an adapted vehicle whose space is personalized. The situation was caused by the misunderstanding of drivers.
Likewise, the residents of the Ikerne building had also asked to undertake certain improvements since before the work they had to deposit the garbage in containers located on the sidewalk in front of the entrance, having to cross the street in an area without pedestrian crossing and with poor visibility. This has been resolved by marking a zebra crossing, installing speed bumps and implementing a Zone 10 speed limit on that section of the road.
Francis Muñoz, Councillor for Mobility, was this morning with the residents of the street to check how the intervention had ended and stressed that “we have taken into account all the difficulties they had and the demands of residents and users and we have acted to eliminate architectural barriers and make the area more accessible and adapted to people”. Two lugs have also been created to facilitate parking and pedestrian crossing.
Muñoz considered that “it was necessary and urgent to improve the accessibility and road safety of this road to improve safety conditions”, which has also involved acting on the pavements.
