Benidorm valorará ocho anteproyectos para la rehabilitación y el nuevo edificio de la plaza de toros

This space will house, among other services, the central library, a Youth Center, a Hotel for Associations and study rooms

Benidorm City Council will evaluate eight proposals for the rehabilitation of the bullring and the construction of a new building in the vicinity to generate a large multicultural and multipurpose space, in which the central library, study rooms, a youth center and another of multiple uses that will function as a hotel for associations.

The Contracting Table has opened today the eight preliminary projects, which must now be evaluated by municipal technicians before proceeding to the opening of the last envelope, in which the bidders will state the mathematical proposition of their offer to be awarded the drafting contract of the basic project, of execution and facultative direction of the works. The Mayor, Toni Pérez; the Councilor for Contracting and European Funds, Aida García Mayor; as well as representatives of opposition groups and municipal technicians to learn about the proposed blueprints.

Toni Pérez highlighted “the originality, quality and design of the eight proposals received for what is probably the most iconic and ambitious project of all those envisaged within the Sustainable and Integrative Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI): the configuration of a space in which culture, creativity, leisure, associationism, multiculturalism, youth, integration and training go hand in hand ”.

The mayor stressed that "not only the city has understood the relevance of this project, but also the consulting firms that have participated notably in this tender, knowing that Benidorm is a unique showcase for the development of innovative architectural proposals."

As Toni Pérez recalled, EDUSI foresees actions for an amount of 23 million euros and that the City Council has obtained 10 million euros in European funds for its development. The project for the bullring has a global budget of 8,695,691 euros and will be ready throughout 2023. Of that amount, just over 500,000 euros will be used to contract the services of project writing and construction management, object of the current tender.

The consulting firm that wins this public tender will have a period of four months to present both projects, so it is expected that the City Council will be able to dispose of them throughout the summer.

Project details

The project plans to recover and give new uses to the bullring, built almost 60 years ago, and generate a new building. The architectural and construction proposal finally chosen will be the one that determines in which of the two buildings - the bullring or the newly built one - all the services provided by the City Council will be installed, as well as the space that each of them will occupy. Broadly speaking, these services are: central library with multiple spaces, such as study rooms and auditorium; youth and youth information center with a large exhibition hall, hotel room for associations, multipurpose, rehearsal and training, and kitchen room; and a multicultural and multifunctional center with offices and warehouses for associations. In addition, it includes the creation of a stage in the stands of the bullring and the installation of a fixed stage and sound and lighting equipment.

The mayor has detailed that “in addition to providing the city with all these services, and thanks to the construction of the new building, this project also solves the accessibility and connectivity of two eminently residential neighborhoods, Foietes-Colonia Madrid and Els Tolls ”. Thus, Alfonso Puchades Avenue and Austria Street will be connected to Parque de l'Aigüera, saving the difference in elevation between the two areas, which will be connected through the building itself. In addition, the project includes improving and expanding the pedestrian space of the whole environment.
