Benidorm transforms the façade of a building in Foietes with two murals to promote local history, culture, and traditions

Benidorm interviene la fachada de un edificio en Foietes con dos murales para difundir la historia, cultura y tradiciones locales

Benidorm City Council is renovating the facades of two buildings located in the Foietes-Colonia Madrid neighbourhood, featuring two murals that capture numerous elements related to local history, culture, and traditions. The aim is to disseminate this information, especially among the younger population. The Councilor for Historical and Cultural Heritage, Ana Pellicer, explained that this intervention is part of "the actions promoted by the City Council to commemorate Benidorm's '700th Anniversary'" and will therefore include "the official logo of this celebration, as we did with the bench located on Paseo de Colón or with Ana Cortes' mural, Bosska, on Avenida del Murtal."

Both murals are being created on the side walls of the façade of the Aitana building, located on Calle Capitán Cortés, and are the work of urban artist Ángel Toledo, of the Grafitimural collective. The Councilor for Historical and Cultural Heritage emphasized that "precisely because of their location—opposite the Bautista Lledó public nursery and primary school and very close to the Serra d'Aitana and Vasco Núñez de Balboa schools, as well as the Guillermo Amor Sports City—they will be seen daily not only by many neighbors but also by hundreds of children on their way to school or to play sports at our Sports City, thus allowing them to immerse themselves in our history and traditions."

Specifically, the murals depict two shelves housing books, music records, and other decorative objects, including one of the emblematic columns of the Castell; the bust of the goddess Tanit; the Hung-Yi swans; a tabalet and a xirimita; the fish dish found in Tossal de La Cala; the symbol of the city's certification as a Green Pioneer destination for Smart Tourism awarded by the European Commission in 2025, and a small boat representing the La Barqueta Cultural and Recreational Association.

Likewise, Ana Pellicer pointed out that both the books and CDs also feature titles of publications related to Benidorm on their spines, including the edition that includes the 1325 Carta de Poblament (Town Charter), which marks its 700th anniversary, as well as recordings made by Benidorm's three musical societies and the Colla de Xirimiters de la Marina. "On each of these shelves, there is a little piece of our history that many young people, many young athletes, and people who attend the various music festivals held during the summer will be able to see," stated the councillor.

The head of Historical and Cultural Heritage stated that the work on both murals will be completed in the coming days and hoped "that it will be to the liking of all citizens." In this regard, Pellicer stated: "We believe it's a work that is very much our own, one that we've done with great enthusiasm, and that residents are already telling us they like it and identify with what we see there, because ultimately, what we see there is Benidorm."
