A plot is reserved for the future morgue
The Benidorm City Council is going to submit to public information the urbanization project of the Special Expansion Plan of Sant Jaume Cemetery in the Marxassos area, which will double the area of the cemetery and "ensure burial capacity for the coming decades", as indicated by the mayor, Toni Pérez, at the end of a Meeting of Spokespersons in which the groups of the Corporation have been informed of the scope and characteristics of the project.
According to the data provided by the mayor, once the expansion is completed, the cemetery will go from the current 41,780 square meters to 91,248, "multiplying the current capacity by more than two." This expansion will be carried out on municipal land located to the north of the current cemetery, and will have "all the services and infrastructures necessary for a modern cemetery, which aims to meet the needs of Benidorm for the next decades.
Toni Pérez explained that the project includes "a large parking space for the reception of visitors", "accommodates and reconverts the current access road into a central single lane" and provides spaces for "all types of burial." In addition, "a plot is reserved for the construction of the future morgue in Benidorm."
The mayor has indicated that this is an action with which "we are anticipating the needs of the city", since with the construction of the last blocks of niches the burial capacity is guaranteed for the next two years. At this point, the Councilor for Cemeteries, Angela Llorca, recalled that "since December 2015 until now, 520 burial units have been built."
Toni Pérez has reported that once the public exhibition period is over, "the next step will be the drafting of the bidding documents for the urbanization project", and has anticipated that, depending on the deadlines when work is done, the expansion could be completed in 2023.
