Benidorm resumes environmental activities on May 16th with a workshop on building nest boxes and insect hotels
The Parks and Gardens Department of Benidorm City Council will hold the first of its scheduled environmental activities on Saturday, May 16th. These activities, which run until May, aim to raise awareness about the role of flora and fauna in parks, biodiversity, and the importance of caring for the environment.
This first activity will be a workshop on building nest boxes and insect hotels. "With this, we want to encourage the presence of beneficial wildlife in parks and, at the same time, raise public awareness of their importance for ecological balance," said González de Zárate. The workshop will teach participants how to build nest boxes for insectivorous birds and insect hotels, and the constructed structures will be installed in various green areas. The activity will be accompanied by an explanation of the role of birds and insects in the biological control of pests and will take place in Foietes Park. It will begin at 10:30 a.m. and end two hours later.
The Councillor for Parks and Gardens highlighted the “important role” these activities play in raising awareness of our parks and green spaces, as well as the flora and fauna found within them, and emphasised the commitment and work being done to benefit nature and the environment so that Benidorm continues to be a sustainable and environmentally conscious city.
This second activity, the councillor continued, is open to everyone, “but especially geared towards families with children so they can learn about the environment and contribute to its care.” The families will build the insect hotels and bird nest boxes, “and they will remain in the park permanently, so that these same families can visit them whenever they wish.” Therefore, González de Zárate wanted to “invite all citizens to participate in this activity on May 16th because they will have a very enjoyable time outdoors.”
