Benidorm receives certification verifying its Water Footprint for 2025
The assessment, conducted in line with ISO 14046, analyses water use for human consumption, food production, green space irrigation and tourism activities
Benidorm City Council received the certificate verifying the town’s water footprint for 2025. Mayor Toni Pérez was presented with the certification by representatives of SGS, the company awarded the contract to audit the city’s water management and assess its water footprint.
The document certifies that Benidorm’s water footprint declaration complies with the UNE-EN ISO 14046:2016 standard. In Benidorm’s case, the assessment analysed the Urban Water Supply and Infrastructure Sector, the Agricultural Sector (irrigation and production), and the Tourism Sector (accommodation and leisure). The certification was signed by Ana Viñado, SGS Director of Sustainability and Climate Change.
The certification is part of a project funded through the ‘Visión 360’ Destination Tourism Sustainability Plan, which once again places the city at the forefront of water management. The project analyses the total amount of water used for human consumption, food production, irrigation and services such as tourism.
The Mayor explained that the ‘Benidorm Integrated Water Footprint Management Plan’ will help "understand the water demands of the different sectors within the municipality and manage them more effectively." He also stated that, through the development of this project, "sustainability and technology are once again coming together."
Pérez stressed that "we must be bold when undertaking projects of this scale and nature, which aim to understand the footprint generated by human activity to take appropriate action, thinking not only about those of us who live here and the millions of visitors who come to the city, but especially about those who will live here in the future."
