Benidorm offers to the Virgen del Carmen and remembers those who died in the sea

17 July 2022
Ofrenda flores El Carmen

Benidorm continues to commemorate the festivity of the Virgen del Carmen. Yesterday, on the day of the patroness saint of sailors, an offering of flowers was held at Plaça de la Senyoria in honour of the Star of the Seas and in memory of those who fell at sea. An offering in which members of the Municipal Corporation, members of the Carmen festivities, the Comissió de Festes Majors Patronals, l'Associació de Penyes, the Festa de Sant Antoni and Mujeres 2000 entity participated.

After making an offering to the patron saint, in the same square and in front of the monument to those who fell into the sea by the artist Juan de Ávalos, the mayor, Toni Pérez, and the Councilor for Fiestas, Jesús Carrobles, laid a laurel wreath in memory of the people from Benidorm who lost their lives at sea. This was joined by those offered by the president of Fiestas del Carmen, Ginés Alvarado, the Sailor of Honor, Sofía Fuster, the patron saint of Benidorm Fishermen's Guild, José Martínez; and by the Queens of the Festes Majors Patronals, Aila Merenciano and Chloe d'Hebboudt, and the president of the Commission, José Vicente Fuster.
Before the offering, a mass was celebrated in honour of the Virgen del Carmen in the parish that bears her name.

The acts in honour of the Virgen del Carmen culminate today with the marine offering, which will depart from the port around 8:00 p.m. and will tour the bay of Benidorm. A procession that each year brings together hundreds of people who follow the procession from the breakwater of the port and El Castell and from the boats that accompany the Virgin on her journey through the waters of Benidorm. Later, on the Paseo de Colón, the Marinera de Honor will recite the verse to the Virgen del Carmen, the work by Vicenta Pérez Bayona, 'Cuqui'.
