Benidorm offers a talk about organic farming to the new awardees of the urban gardens in l'Horta

Benidorm City Council's Department of the Environment offered a talk on the ecological management of urban gardens to the beneficiaries of the 48 new gardens developed by the City Council on Camí de la Parva, in the heart of the Huerta (Huerta).

The Councillor for the Environment, Mónica Gómez, reported that this talk was subsidised with €1,500 by the Alicante Provincial Council, as part of the call for grants to city councils for urban garden projects, awarded by the Department of Economic Development and Productive Sectors. She explained that the objective of the talk was "to offer new users of these gardens basic knowledge about their operation and about organic farming."

Mónica Gómez visited the workshop participants to thank them for attending the event and to express her hope that they would enjoy managing these small gardens, intended for personal consumption and which "are also an ideal and increasingly sought-after tool for socialising and sharing experiences and knowledge with other users," she recalled.

These 48 new urban gardens are located in Camí de La Parva, in the Huerta de Benidorm area, and are added to the 49 plots that have already been in operation in this space since 2022. This second phase of the project was carried out by students of the 'T'Avalem Benidorm Jove II' program, and the plots were awarded on September 30th through a public lottery.

Management of urban gardens

The Environment councillor recalled that "as we announced a couple of weeks ago, once this new phase of La Parva is operational, we will organise the remaining urban garden areas in the city to free up any unused plots or plots whose recipients are not complying with the terms and conditions, so that these plots can be used by other interested parties."

Currently, Benidorm has a total of 171 plots available to the public in three areas of the city, all of them designated for organic farming and personal consumption. Gómez emphasised "Benidorm City Council's commitment to urban gardens, which, beyond environmental considerations, have established themselves as an activity and a tool for creating community and human ties, contributing very positively to social sustainability."
