Benidorm installs 548 photovoltaic panels to reduce consumption and CO2 emissions at Palau d'Esports

The global project foresees the reduction of more than 375 tons of CO2 per year

Benidorm City Council is undertaking the placement of 548 photovoltaic panels in the Palau d'Esports L'Illa de Benidorm, an action framed in the Energy Efficiency Project that covers three other municipal buildings and eight primary schools. In parallel, work is also being carried out these days to install photovoltaic modules in the Town Hall.

The intervention, which entails increasing the number of plates already existing in the sports facility, will lead to significant savings in energy bills, in addition to significantly reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere. In this sense, it has been calculated that the approximate savings on the bill "will be 50%", as specified by the Councilor for Urban Scene, Francis Muñoz, who visited the facilities this morning accompanied by municipal technicians and managers of the installation company.

The total of the photovoltaic installation in Palau, including an extension of modules that responds to an improvement in the contract, reaches 220 kW of nominal power. Total production will be 351,572 kWh and the estimated annual savings will be 290,000 kWh. In the bill, the savings calculated are around 32,500 euros per year and the reduction in emissions will be 190 tons of CO2.

The placement of these plaques is complemented by the implementation of modules in eight schools in the city, which has already been completed. Specifically, including Palau, the project included the installation of 1,364 photovoltaic modules and entails a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere of just over 375 tons. The modules have been implemented in Ausias March, Bautista Lledó, La Cala, Mestre Gaspar López, Miguel Hernández, Serra Gelada, Vasco Núñez de Balboa, and Els Tolls schools and the municipal buildings of Les Fontanelles Nursery School, the Treatment Plant of Drinking Water (ETAP), La Torreta Social Center.

The global investment amounts to 1,045,450.06 euros, of which 504,297.46 euros, 48% of the global amount, comes from a subsidy from European funds granted by the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE).

It should be remembered that energy savings are calculated based on the use of the energy generated by the photovoltaic installation, taking into account the consumption patterns of the building.

As for the global project, -the eight schools and the four public buildings- the installed nominal power once the intervention is finished will be 569.55 kW, which will produce more than 730,000 kWh. The facilities of each center have high-performance modules, power optimizers, and a monitoring and management system for the photovoltaic field.

As all the facilities have continuous use during the hours of greatest solar radiation, the optimization of the production of the photovoltaic installation will lead to maximum energy savings, as well as the compensation of production surpluses with the transfer of energy to the electrical network in weekends and holidays when these units are not in use.

The Councilor for Urban Scene stressed that this project "reaffirms our commitment to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals, with sustainability" and in this case, he continued, "we do it by using renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions”.

Francis Muñoz specified that once the installation of all the planned modules is completed "we will reduce CO2 emissions by more than 375 tons per year", a figure that he has described as "very important" and that is added to "the reduction in emissions obtained in other actions already developed or that will be implemented in the short and medium term”.

Lastly, the councillor referred to the Energy Efficiency project undertaken by Benidorm, of which he said "It is very ambitious and will make Benidorm a more sustainable city and destination". "We work side by side with the municipal technicians so that this political vocation translates into realities for the people of Benidorm" he added. Muñoz recalled that "since 2015, the city has been implementing savings and renovation policies that have given magnificent results, as evidenced by the continuous reduction in energy and electricity costs in recent years despite the brutal increase in cost."
