Benidorm gets ‘Calculo + Reduzco’ seal issued to the Ministry by reducing CO2 emissions on the beaches

14 February 2020
Benidorm consigue el sello ‘Calculo + Reduzco’ que emite al Ministerio al minorar las emisiones de CO2 en las playas

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition has granted to the Department of Beaches of Benidorm Citi Hall the Seal 'Calculo + Reduzco' level of the Carbon Footprint 2018 by having reduced CO2 emissions by almost 2% in the three beaches and two coves from the city. Specifically, there has been a reduction of 1.93% in emissions in the 2016-2018 triennium compared to 2015-2017.

The councilor of the area, Mónica Gómez, recalled that “in 2016 we registered with the Ministry the Carbon Footprint, in which the tons of CO2 that the management of all the services of the beaches and coves of Benidorm were reflected annually: rescue , leisure activities, cleaning, etc. ” The municipal calculation, based on data from the previous year, was validated at the time by the TUVRheinlad certification company.

With the registration of the Footprint “the first step was taken in the commitment to control and reduce CO2 emissions in the management of our main tourist attraction: the beaches”. From that moment, "year by year we have received a certificate, although this is the first time that the seal also includes the parameter 'Reduzco', which reflects that our commitment to the protection of the environment is working."

Gómez said that "according to the data we have, the decrease in emissions has been mainly due to the reduction of electricity consumption in the management of beaches." "We talked - he has clarified - of indirect emissions of greenhouse gases."

The head of Playas has indicated that “our objective is to continue adopting measures that also affect the reduction of direct emissions in order to make our beaches and the activities involved in their management even more sustainable, and advance at the same time in the fulfillment of the Objective of UN Sustainable Development (SDG) number 13: Climate Action ”.
