Benidorm establishes alternative traffic on Severo Ochoa avenue for the renovation and wastewater drive works

12 June 2023
Benidorm establece el tráfico alternativo en la avenida Severo Ochoa por las obras de renovación e impulsión de aguas residuales

Benidorm City Council has started today the establishment of alternative traffic on Severo Ochoa Avenue, at the height of the so-called 'El Niño curve' due to the execution of the work to modify the wastewater delivery system in the zone. The modifications in road traffic will be maintained for approximately 15 days. However, vehicles will be able to continue driving on this road through the lane that has been enabled and regulated by traffic lights that will give them way alternatively.

In addition, within these works, the asphalting of the Camí dels Torrers will also be carried out, which will begin on the 19th, although in this case, these works will only last two days.

The renovation of the Severo Ochoa and Sierra Helada pumping stations is a "vital" work that has been carried out for months to put an end to the breakdowns that have occurred in recent years, as explained by the acting mayor, Toni Pérez, who has paid a visit to the performance today.

The intervention, with an execution period of six months and a budget of 1,511,570.91 euros, is being carried out by the concessionaire of the Water Cycle, Hidraqua, charged to investment funds. “The action is carried out because we only had one drive line instead of two, so that if there were a breakdown we would be left without being able to drive the wastewater and it would end up in the sea. That is what we intend to avoid” the mayor pointed out.

The overall project consisted of conditioning the pumping station on Severo Ochoa Avenue, changing the existing pumps and electrical panels, as well as modifying some elements to improve the operation of the station.

A section of about 300 meters of the current pipeline that runs through Severo Ochoa in the section between Camino de Torreros and Nápoles Street is also replaced by a 700-millimeter ductile iron pipe with an interior polyethylene coating. The intervention also entails the repair of a damaged drive section at the Severo Ochoa station.

Toni Pérez stressed that it is a "fundamental" action for the treatment of wastewater in Benidorm "that complements and continues other investments that we have made in different parts of the city to achieve the best possible water management. Once finished, we will once again have two drive lines with full guarantees of operation”.

The mayor, however, lamented that "neither the Ministry nor the Ministry invests in Benidorm what corresponds to them, and in the end, it is the city that has to take charge of the lack of investment of both administrations." In this sense, he reiterated his criticism of the EPSAR, dependent on the Ministry, "which does not invest in the city even though it receives more than four million from Benidorm every year."

On the other hand, and as an improvement activity, the project includes the construction of a new roundabout at the junction of Camí dels Torrers with Severo Ochoa, at the height of the 'La curva del Niño'.
