Benidorm commemorates the ‘International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women’

On the occasion of the celebration of the 'International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women' today, November 25, Benidorm City Council has displayed a commemorative banner on the main balcony of the town hall, in an act in which the entire corporation has participated, headed by the mayor, Toni Pérez; and the Councilor for Equality, Angela Zaragozí.

Coinciding with the anniversary, in the city's Secondary Education Institutes (IES) the ten short films from the first two editions of Documóvil are screened during the day, an initiative of the Department of Equality that shows the vision of the students about gender violence and the sexist society in which we live. Young people are scriptwriters, protagonists and directors of these stories that reach the screens with the financial support of the City Council and the technician of professionals in the sector.

The events on the occasion of the 'International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women' have continued this afternoon with a minute of silence at the main door of the City Council, convened throughout the country by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), in which the municipal corporation, public workers and neighbors have participated once again in solidarity with the women who have lost their lives for this cause, which now number 41, so far this year. The last, an 84-year-old Sevillian, on November 8. This social scourge also shows a figure of 23 orphaned minors.

Also, within the events scheduled for today, Benidorm participates in the virtual reading of a manifesto, prepared by the Regional Council for Equality.

The commemoration of 'International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women' dates back to 1981, when activists in favor of women's rights protested against gender violence in memory of the Mirabal sisters –Patria, Minerva and María Teresa - three women, political activists, who were tortured and murdered in the Dominican Republic by the dictator Trujillo at the end of the fifties of the last century. Due to these events, the United Nations (UN), in 2000, set November 25 on the calendar.
