Benidorm begins replanting the ficus tree that a windstorm uprooted from Elche Park 15 years ago

Benidorm City Council, through the Department of Parks and Gardens, began replanting the Ficus macrophylla tree this morning, uprooted fifteen years ago from Elche Park because of a windstorm. The tree will now be located in Foietes Park, where machinery was already in place this morning, preparing for planting.
After being uprooted by the storm's strong winds, the ficus was moved to the municipal nursery, where it was given every care necessary to recover the tree for future replanting. It underwent root conditioning, root restructuring, and selective pruning. “The goal was to become part of the urban green infrastructure once again so that we could recover the municipal tree heritage instead of losing it,” said José Ramón González de Zárate, Councillor for Parks and Gardens, who visited the work being carried out today.
The location chosen for planting the tree is because “we are in a location where Reading Days are commemorated every year, and it is also a spot where many park users gather because it is a regular meeting place,” the councillor indicated. The goal is for this large ficus to provide a large area of shade within about two years, “so we are continuing the efforts we are carrying out in this park to provide shade for residents and users, especially during the hottest season,” said González de Zárate.
To achieve this, rooting hormones such as gibberellins and auxins will be administered, "which promotes very strong root development and significant growth in the plant," the councillor concluded.
