The Consortium considers measures for 2019 if the dry period persists

Benidorm and Marina Baixa are guaranteed water supply for consumption and irrigation for the rest of the year

13 June 2018
Benidorm y la Marina Baixa tienen garantizado el abastecimiento de agua para consumo y riego para el resto del año

Benidorm and the rest of the Marina Baixa have guaranteed the supply of water for human consumption and irrigation throughout the summer and for the remainder of the year. This is clear from the report of the Supply Report which has been reported today during the extraordinary session of the General Board of the Marina Baixa Water Consortium held in the Plenary Hall of the City of Benidorm and chaired by the president of the Provincial Council of Alicante, César Sánchez. A meeting in which the mayor, Toni Pérez, and the councilor of the Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate, have also participated.

The report, dated June 4, concludes "for the current year is guaranteed" the supply, although "have already begun to perform similar actions to times of drought" because "it seems that we are entering" in a " dry period". In fact, "during the period from April 2017 to May 2018 the rain was only 264 liters per square meter" when the rainfall of "an average normal year" is 600 liters per square meter. In addition, so far in 2018 "the rains have been scarce" in the region.

According to the report, this lack of rainfall "contrasts with the flows that were discharged into the sea in the spring of 2017 and to a lesser extent the ecological flows in this year 2018."

Given the possibility that the dry period continues, the Consortium has announced that next autumn will mark or not "the need for external contributions for the year 2019"; something that would not be necessary in case of rainfall similar to previous years. The Councilor of Water Cycle indicated that "we have studies and we know that because of the amount of water stored we can talk about assured supply until autumn 2019", although it has appealed to prudence and not to advance events or scenarios in the long term.

De Zárate stated that for the summer season the guarantee of supply "is a very important fact for the tranquility of businessmen, citizens and tourists, who can come without any problem because there will not be water cuts here".

According to the data collected in the report, the Guadalest reservoir was in mid-May at 51.42% of its capacity, and at 39.05% that of Amadorio.

In the same session of the Water Consortium, the liquidation of the 2017 budget was also approved, in which there were "important changes in investment" due to the substitution "of the main pipeline of the Guadalest reservoir", a work that "is still running," de Zárate pointed out.
