With the new rules and layouts, the accident rate has been reduced by 20%
Benidorm as a tourist destination is already almost in the same figures that in the summer of 2019, in almost all parameters, thanks to Spanish tourism that continues to bet on Benidorm, the European capital of Sun and Beach tourism.
"And the city is ready for it," said the Councilor for Mobility and Public Space José Ramón González de Zárate, who stressed that at the three main entrances to the city -Comunidad Valenciana Avenue, Juan Pablo II and Europa- traffic levels are above 25,000 vehicles a day, the exception is specific moments of heavy traffic specially at junctions ”.
De Zárate stressed that "the road traffic system in Rincón de Loix, with its roundabouts, has managed the increases in traffic in that area very well." The traffic lights zone has, at certain times, some traffic jums.
Regarding the current regulations on speed on urban roads, the councilor stressed that "it is being followed and in all the areas it has been possible to reduce the speed thanks to public awareness." This reduction has also had a very positive counterpart, explained González de Zárate: "the accident rate has been reduced by 20% and the accidents that occur now have, at a lower speed, less serious consequences".
Regarding parking, the councilor highlighted the "high turnover in the blue zone" and "the very high occupancy of the more than 5,500 park-and-ride parking spaces, which are added to the 9,500 spaces available in the streets." Benidorm has "more than 56,500 parking spaces, of which about 40,000 correspond to authorized spaces in authorized private buildings and garages."
As for the demand for mobility, the councilor has stressed that at weekends it is being put into operation the free shift of the taxi service, with the entire staff of 232 vehicles operating normally ”.
In his balance, González de Zárate highlighted that Benidorm is recovering normality day by day, driven by being a leading holiday and leisure benchmark, responding to road infrastructures and new developments to demand, channeling flows and complying with the sustainability regulations of speed reduction on urban roads ”.
De Zárate thanked "citizen behavior to make occasional increases in traffic much more bearable."
