The performance, funded by the Hidraqua Renewal Fund, will begin after the Patronal Majors Festes and will end before Christmas

Benidorm will replace a section of sewage on Madrid Avenue to eliminate bad odors and discharges onto the beach

Benidorm sustituirá un tramo de alcantarillado de la avenida Madrid para acabar con los malos olores y los vertidos a la playa

Benidorm City Council will undertake the replacement of a section of the wastewater collector on Madrid Avenue, on Paseo de Levante, in order to put an end to bad odors and the arrival of dirty water to the beach every time there is an episode. of heavy rain or a storm.

This is what the Councilor for the Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate, said this morning during the visit made by the 'At the foot of the street' campaign to the area. A visit in which he was accompanied by the Councilor for Citizen Participation, Ana Pellicer; that of Street Cleaning, Luis Navarro, and the mayor of Festivals, Mariló Cebreros.

The performance, with a budget of 94,710 euros, will begin once the Festes Majors Patronals is over and will end before Christmas. It will cover a section of 150 linear meters, from Torre Principado building to Ametlla de Mar Avenue, according to González de Zárate. It will be financed from the Renewal Fund of the Hidraqua concessionaire.

The problem has its origin not only in the age of the collector but also in the fact that it has "little inclination", which is why "the water does not flow as it should and when there is rain with a certain intensity it comes out of the sewers and accumulates in the promenade and the beach.”

The sewer network on Madrid Avenue is made up of a PVC collector with a diameter of 315 millimeters, whose operation, "due to this poor slope, is generating frequent clogs that are worsened in episodes of rain." The work includes the renovation of said collector and will be used to improve the slope by increasing its depth until it connects with the Ametlla de Mar sewer network.

González de Zárate has pointed out that the work “is simple and quite quick to execute” because it does not offer many complications for road traffic, coordination has already been made with the hotels and establishments, and “it will be carried out in the low season on the beaches.” In that sense, he regretted that “what has cost the most” has been Costas' authorization, which “has taken a long time to arrive.”

“Every time we are going to do some work or work that is beneficial to the city, they put obstacles in front of us and do not give us permits and also do not give us any help even though they are actions that are within their competence,” stated the councilor, who alluded to both to “the delay of Costas as well as to the EPSAR, which is the one who should execute the intervention.”

In any case, the Water Cycle councilor has insisted that the replacement of the collector will mean “solving an important problem for the city that has never been solved by whoever is responsible for it and the City Council has decided to do so".
