The objective is to facilitate the availability of tap water to citizens, encourage its consumption and reduce the generation of plastic waste associated with single-use bottles
Benidorm is testing a pilot project to install refrigerated drinking water fountains in the municipality

A pump has already been installed at the intersection of Armada Española and Racharell Avenue, and two more will be installed this week in Séquia Mare Park and Torrejó Square.
Benidorm City Council has begun installing three refrigerated drinking water fountains in three locations throughout the municipality. This initiative is part of a pilot project being carried out by the council in conjunction with Hidraqua, the city's Integrated Water Cycle concessionaire. The project aims to "facilitate the availability of tap water to residents and tourists in highly frequented public spaces," said Mayor Toni Pérez, who visited the first of these installed fountains along with José Ramón González de Zárate, Councilor for Water Cycle, members of the local government, and company officials.
The first of these fountains is located on Avenida Armada Española at its intersection with Avenida Racharell. Two more will be installed this week in Séquia Mare Park and Plaza del Torrejó, next to the Tourist Office. The three chilled drinking water dispensers are intended to supply water to residents and are connected to the municipal drinking water supply network.
Toni Pérez explained that the initiative "encourages the consumption of tap water as a safe and healthy option and at the same time reduces the generation of plastic waste associated with single-use water bottles." Furthermore, the mayor emphasized that this "reduces the environmental impact and contributes to building a more sustainable future."
The dispensers in question are supplied directly from the municipal drinking water supply network and have a cooling system to provide cold water to users. They have an electrical connection to power the cooling system and a drain outlet to drain excess water. They are also made of weather- and vandal-resistant material and are designed to be accessible for people with reduced mobility.
The mayor also stated that the hygienic and sanitary quality of the fountains "is guaranteed" given that it is "drinking water from the Benidorm supply network, which meets the strictest quality controls."
