For two months, only users of the public parking and residents with a ford will be able to access Mercado and Ramos Carratalá streets.

Benidorm starts work next week to complete the urbanization of La Garita street

08 October 2020
Benidorm inicia la setmana vinent les obres per a completar la urbanització del carrer La Garita...

Next week the works will begin to complete the urbanization of La Garita street, between Ramos Carratalá and Los Almendros. Works with which "urban services are renewed and this section of La Garita street is paved, prolonging the model of a single platform of pedestrian priority that already works on the other part of the road", the mayor of Works explained today, José Ramón González de Zárate.

De Zárate has detailed that “with this project, valued at 173,000 euros, we give aesthetic continuity to La Garita street, since we are going to use the same materials that we already use in the renovated section: paving stone on the part of the road and granite tile for the pedestrian zone ”. Likewise, "in addition to unifying the aesthetics of La Garita and practically completing the renovation of the streets of Ensanche del Casco Antiguo, the sidewalk of Antonio Ramos Carratalá street, which at the moment is too narrow and deteriorated, will be improved" . In this way, through this improvement obtained with the tender for the work, "we continue to advance towards total pedestrian accessibility in the downtown area, to which we have dedicated significant resources in the last five years".

The person in charge of Works has detailed that "as in all the actions on public roads that we have carried out in this time, the redevelopment of La Garita street will also involve the renewal of the water network that runs through the subsoil." Thus, the entire wastewater network will be renewed "since the current one is very deteriorated after more than 30 years in service"; the rainwater network will be improved and the drinking water infrastructure will be expanded "to avoid the constant breakdowns and even leaks that occur in this section."

When planning this action, it has also been taken into account to facilitate "the circulation and maneuverability of the vehicles that usually carry out loading and unloading tasks in the area, such as those that supply the hypermarket located in the lower of the Municipal Market ”; company that pays for this work based on an agreement signed with the City Council.

De Zárate has clarified that the works are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, October 14 and last for an approximate period of two months. While the work lasts, traffic will be cut on Mercado and Ramos Carratalá streets, which can only be accessed by vehicles that are users of the public parking lot of the municipal market and residents with fords or garages on these roads. The access and exit of these vehicles will take place on Mercado Street, which, like Ramos Carratalá, will have a double direction of traffic while the work lasts, temporarily eliminating the parking spaces. Depending on the development of the works, vehicles with fords on La Garita Street will access this point on Mercado Street or through San José Artesano Street.
