The aim is to put an end to uncontrolled spills into the beach from the park's urban basin

Benidorm City Council has submitted a request to the Head of the Provincial Coastal Service in Alicante, Rosa de los Ríos, to authorise the installation of a rainwater pumping station in Elche Park. “A necessary work that we have to undertake, but for which we first need permission from the Coastal Service as it is located within the Maritime-Terrestrial Public Domain” said the Councillor for the Water Cycle, José Ramón González de Zárate.

The City Council has planned the installation of this pumping station to solve the problems of spills to Poniente Beach in the urban basin of Elche Park, spills that occur mainly during episodes of heavy rains.

The solution adopted by the City Council consists of two actions. On the one hand, the installation of a new Storm Water Pumping Station (EBAP) located next to the lowest point of rainwater collection of the entire urban basin that makes up the park, which will collect the water collected by the stormwater network to send it to the wastewater network, thus preventing it from reaching the beach.

On the other hand, the construction of a weir inside the drain located at the lowest point of the road on Calle Alcalde José Such Ortega (head of the stormwater collector that discharges directly onto the beach) is proposed to divert the low waters from it towards the new EBAP.

González de Zárate has specified that these works "will allow us to put an end to the recurring problems of discharges that end up on the beach when it rains." The councillor stressed that “the governing team will continue to invest everything necessary in hydraulic infrastructure, not only for better use of water but also to avoid problems that could damage the city's image”.

The councillor for the Water Cycle is confident that the authorisation from Costas “will not be delayed” so that work can begin “as soon as possible”.
