Benidorm registers the carbon footprint of its beaches to control CO2 emissions

06 June 2017
Benidorm registra la huella de carbono de sus playas para controlar las emisiones de CO2

The medium-term objective is to draw up measures to reduce emissions without reducing services

Benidorm City Council has registered the carbon footprint of its beaches in the Ministry of the Environment, a first step in the commitment of the local administration to control and reduce CO2 emissions in the management of its main tourist claim. The Councilor for Beaches, Lorenzo Martínez, explained that the Ministry has validated the calculation made by the City Council of tons of CO2 that annually involves the management of all services beaches and coves of Benidorm: rescue, leisure activities, cleaning , etc.

Martínez has indicated that the calculation sent to the Ministry and registered in the footprint corresponds to the year 2015 and amounts to 537 tons, about 0.01 tons per user. A fact that can be consulted on the website of the Ministry (www.magrama.es), which was validated at the time by TUVRheinlad certification company.

From this carbon footprint, the City Council will "monitor and control those values to detect possible variations." In the absence of these annual measurements, the councilman said that "we expect the volume of emissions to fall as the new machinery that is being incorporated into the beaches is more efficient," as was foreseen in the comprehensive contract for beaches.

Once the footprint is registered and the values are controlled, "the next step is to adopt measures to reduce these CO2 emissions and make our beaches even more sustainable."
