The City Council aims to raise awareness of the importance of wildlife in these areas, promote biodiversity, and emphasize that the environment belongs to everyone

Benidorm is organizing a wide range of environmental activities in the city's urban parks this quarter

Benidorm organiza en este trimestre un amplio programa de actividades ambientales en los parques urbanos de la ciudad

The Parks and Gardens Department of Benidorm City Council is launching a comprehensive environmental program this April in various urban parks throughout the city. These activities are aimed at primary school students and the general public. The program, developed in collaboration with the concessionaire Actúa and the Education Department, will run until June and seeks to raise awareness about the role of wildlife in parks, biodiversity, and the importance of caring for the environment.

This April, the program will focus on the importance of wildlife in urban parks. Three different activities will be offered. The first will be guided biodiversity walks in urban parks. According to the Councillor for Parks and Gardens, José Ramón González de Zárate, the objective is "to raise awareness of the fauna and flora present in municipal green spaces, promoting respect for and conservation of urban biodiversity." The activity will consist of a guided interpretive bike ride to identify urban birds, pollinating insects, and native flora, “all accompanied by an explanation of the ecological function of urban parks as biodiversity refuges and the role of green spaces in improving the urban climate and environmental quality.” It will last approximately an hour and a half and will take place in L’Aigüera, Sequia Mare, and Foietes parks.

The second activity in April will be a workshop on building nest boxes and insect hotels. “With this, we want to encourage the presence of beneficial fauna in the parks and, at the same time, raise public awareness of their importance for ecological balance,” said González de Zárate. The workshop will teach participants how to build nest boxes for insectivorous birds and insect hotels, and the constructed structures will be installed in various green spaces. The workshop will include an explanation of the role of birds and insects in the biological control of pests and will be held in Foietes and Sequia Mare parks.

The final activity in April is called ‘Pollinator-Friendly Parks’ and aims, according to the councillor, “to raise awareness about the importance of pollinating insects and encourage their presence in municipal green spaces.” To this end, small floral workshops will be held featuring melliferous and native species, educational signs about pollinating insects will be installed, and workshops on beneficial insects and urban biodiversity will be offered.

The councillor concluded by stating that during May and June, “we will continue to carry out environmental activities, which we will explain in more detail later, so that citizens, and especially schoolchildren, can participate.”
