The city also has more than 5 km pedestrian spaces and about 270,000 square meters of green areas, and 91 km of bike lanes and cyclo-streets

Armada Española avenue, the final section of Sant Pere street and El Greco street - in Colonia Madrid - will be pedestrian starting tomorrow, May 9. The Mobility Advisory Council has today endorsed this proposal from the Local Government, which increases the surface area of pedestrian streets in Benidorm to 9.3 kilometers, to which are added the more than 5 kilometers with the city's promenades.

As the mayor, Toni Pérez, announced a few days ago, the initial purpose of this proposal is "to increase pedestrian spaces while the situation generated by the Covid-19 crisis lasts, as well as its consequences." In addition to the pedestrian streets and promenades, Benidorm has 91 kilometers of bicycle lanes and almost 270,000 square meters of green areas through which to walk or play sports in the time bands set by the Government of Spain during the current phase of de-escalated.

With these pedestrian areas, the mayor has pointed out, “not only do we provide citizens with more spaces to walk or play sports, but we also provide hospitality establishments with the possibility, temporarily and as appropriate, of redistributing their terraces while the capacity restrictions decreed by the Government of Spain ”.

During the Mobility Advisory Council, the councilor of the area, José Ramón González de Zárate explained that “in the case of Armada Española Avenue El Greco street, these sections are now pedestrian provisionally, although the intention is to maintain it in the future with a unique platform configuration, so that roadways and sidewalks are on the same level. ” Thus, “we intend to implement in this section of Poniente the model that has been operating for many years on the Levante front line”.

In this way, from this Saturday "only public transport, emergency vehicles and owners with parking on this avenue will be able to access Armada Española; while the loading and unloading will take place at a fixed time that next week we will agree between the City Council, AICO, Abreca and the delivery sector ”.

In the case of the final section of Sant Pere street, the one that runs between Maravall and Jaime I, the person in charge of Mobility has pointed out that “we have just concluded the action that this road has already left as the only platform, and only the installation of the access control that will prevent the passage of vehicles, with the exception of public transport and emergency services ”.

As highlighted by the mayor during the Advisory Council, "these pedestrian streets are in line with the measures being adopted at the national level in large capitals such as Madrid or Barcelona due to the health crisis, and with which they want to give more space and leading role for pedestrians and cyclists, a policy, in addition, in full accordance with our Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (PMUS) ”.

Likewise, the mayor recalled that a free parking lot with capacity for 200 vehicles has recently been created on Xixo Avenue, which can be accessed from Mayor Vicente Pérez Devesa and Uruguay avenues. To these parking spaces will be added shortly the hundreds collected in the new roads of the Unidad de Actuación número 1 Poniente that will link with Vía Parque ”.
