The city was the best positioned in the Valencian Community, exceeding one million kilos collected from June to August, 69% more than in 2021.

Benidorm has obtained the 'Green Flag' award that Ecovidrio gives annually to the municipalities that present the best glass recycling numbers during the summer season and with which the entity recognizes and rewards the commitment of the city and its hospitality sector with sustainability and the recovery and reuse of waste. An award that the mayor, Toni Pérez, collected this Wednesday from the Secretary of State for the Environment, Hugo Morán, at a ceremony held in Madrid, which was attended by the Councilor for the Environment, Mónica Gómez and José Manuel Núñez-Lagos, CEO of Ecovidrio.

As expressed by the manager of Ecovidrio in the Valencian Community, Roberto Fuertes, Benidorm has been the best-positioned municipality of the 39 in the region that have participated in this 'Green Flag' campaign, thus revalidating the award it won in the first edition of this initiative.
The mayor explained that "Benidorm has achieved this 'Green Flag' due to the excellent glass collection and recycling data signed by the city during the months of June, July, and August, which have been possible thanks to the commitment to the sustainability of the that our productive fabric shows off on a daily basis, especially the hotel industry, which is the sector that generates and recovers a large part of this waste and which is key in this campaign”. "This firm and decisive commitment of our hotel industry -he added- is common and extendable to the entire population and allows Benidorm to show recycling figures per inhabitant ostensibly above the national average, year after year".

Specifically, during the summer in Benidorm, 1,039,166 kilos of glass were collected, almost 70% more than in 2021, a volume that has led the city "to occupy, once again, a prominent place within the 'Green Flags' movement ', which is clearly in tune with our philosophy and strategy as a tourist destination and with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to whose achievement we focus the day-to-day of our municipal action, thus advancing in the transition from a linear economy to a circular economy”.

According to the data transferred by Ecovidrio, the recycling of glass containers signed by Benidorm during the summer season has managed to avoid the extraction of 1,250,000 kilos of raw materials and has avoided the emission of 603,000 kilos of CO2 into the environment.

In the campaign for this summer of 2022, Benidorm has had the participation of 324 catering establishments. In addition to the increase in glass recycling compared to the previous year and the number of establishments adhering to the initiative, when awarding the 'Green Flag' to Benidorm, Ecovidrio has valued the involvement of the City Council in the dissemination and promotion of the campaign.

In addition to Benidorm, Ecovidrio has also recognized the Alicante municipality of Orihuela; the Andalusians Fuengirola and Chiclana de la Frontera; to San Javier in the region of Murcia; Lloret de Mar and Torroella de Montgrí-Estartit on the Catalan coast; and to Sant Antoni de Portmany in the Balearic Islands. In addition, hospitality establishments from the four autonomous communities have also been awarded.
