A new hydraulic infrastructure will collect the first rainwater, the most polluting, to pump it to the treatment plant

Avenida Armada Española will be open to pedestrians and traffic during Holy Week

23 February 2023
Avenida Armada Española en Benidorm

The action has meant intervening in 34 connections instead of the nine planned due to the age of the existing ones

The Avenida de la Armada Española will be open to vehicle traffic and pedestrian traffic before Easter, according to what the mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, has announced today during a visit to the works that are being carried out in the area.

The visit took place within the framework of the 'A pie de calle' campaign and was accompanied by the councilors for Public Space and Citizen Participation, José Ramón González de Zárate and Ana Pellicer, the technicians responsible for the work, members of the Council Neighborhood, representatives of neighborhood associations and a large group of residents.

There, the municipal technicians have explained the details of the action, which consists of creating a single platform, renewing the rainwater collection network, and undertaking the connection of wastewater from the housing blocks to the sewerage network.

In fact, in addition to installing pumping stations, a total of 34 connections have also been made instead of the nine initially planned. "We have come across some infrastructures that, due to their age, were in poor condition, which has caused greater complexity in the work," Pérez explained.

One of the primary objectives of the work is the construction of an infrastructure that collects the first rainwater, which is the one that carries the greatest amount of pollutants, to pump it to the treatment plant.

This new installation, which will go underground, is being built at the confluence of Jaime I with the Spanish Navy. Another pumping station will be undertaken at the height of the Xixo ravine.

However, the mayor indicated that the bulk of the work will be very advanced in the face of the Easter holiday period "to circulate normally." At this point, he stressed the "enormous effort" made to have enough personnel "so that the work continues according to the scheduled because at this time it is difficult to have enough manpower to develop the investments on time."

The implementation of this road with no sidewalks will also entail intervention in all the fords of the buildings, something that is also planned to be done before Easter. After those dates, the work will continue "with the placement of the layers of agglomerate on the road and the implementation of technological milestones" has advanced.

Toni Pérez stressed that "we will take the time that is necessary to leave everything in the best conditions", but has qualified that "the deadlines are being met very well despite the great complexity of the work and the unforeseen events that have arisen.

"With these projects and these actions, our commitment to sustainability and the continuous improvement of water infrastructures that allow our citizens to have a better quality of life is evident" the mayor added.

These interventions are complementary to those of the implementation of the Low Emission Zone (ZBE), which will reduce the intensity of vehicles, improve environmental and pedestrian conditions and encourage the use of bicycles and personal mobility vehicles.
