Benidorm finalises security plan for August 12 eclipse and reminds public that vehicle access to El Tossal and La Cruz is prohibited

Benidorm City Council is finalising a special operational plan for the total solar eclipse on August 12, focusing primarily on managing vehicle and pedestrian access to two of the city's highest vantage points: El Tossal de La Cala and La Cruz de Serra Gelada. Councillor for Public Security Jesús Carrobles explained that the operation, which the Local Police will carry out in coordination with the National Police, "is determined by the traffic restrictions already in place at both locations, El Tossal and La Cruz, as well as by any pre-emergency alert that may be declared for that day by the Valencian Community's 112 emergency service."

Vehicle access to El Tossal de La Cala, La Cruz de Serra Gelada and the surrounding areas is strictly prohibited, except for residents. Pedestrian access, meanwhile, could also be restricted if Level 3 pre-emergency status is declared due to wildfire risk or extreme temperatures. In this regard, Carrobles noted that "La Cruz is located within the Serra Gelada Natural Park, where public access has had to be restricted several times this summer, most recently on July 23, precisely because of the high wildfire risk."

The Local Police will set up traffic checkpoints in these areas to prevent unauthorised vehicles from entering. Officers will also inform pedestrians of any access restrictions that may be in force.

Finally, the councillor reminded residents of the safety recommendations issued by the Valencian regional government for viewing the eclipse without risking eye damage. These include using certified eclipse glasses bearing the ISO 12312-2 marking—either on the glasses themselves, their packaging or the instructions—ensuring they are in good condition, avoiding unnecessary travel, protecting against the heat, and following updates through official information channels.
