Benidorm modernises the design of its street furniture and improves energy efficiency
The initiative, focused on urban advertising displays, will continue over the coming months until all of these installations have been upgraded.
Benidorm City Council has launched a project to renew the appearance and design of much of the city’s street furniture. The initiative will see these elements replaced with more modern units featuring improved energy efficiency.
According to Urban Scene Councillor Francis Muñoz, the project includes “the installation of new-generation MUPIs (urban information and advertising displays), manufactured using high-quality materials such as stainless steel and tempered glass, which stand out for their high resistance, durability and aesthetic quality.”
Muñoz explained that, through this renovation, the City Council is maintaining “the same design and materials approach implemented in recent projects, thereby consolidating a consistent and unified image of urban furniture throughout the municipality.” The result is a collection of displays with a modern, clean and functional design. The councillor added that the chosen design was conceived “to blend harmoniously into the urban environment and provide a long service life with reduced maintenance requirements.”
Replacing the old displays also represents a significant improvement in terms of accessibility. The new design eliminates protruding elements and extends all vertical lines down to ground level, creating a more compact, safer structure better adapted to pedestrian movement.
The project also marks a major step forward in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability. Francis Muñoz highlighted that “the new MUPIs feature fully LED lighting technology, which reduces electricity consumption by approximately 65% compared with the previous displays.” In addition, each unit has an installed power rating of less than 80 watts, “which also helps reduce energy consumption and the environmental footprint of urban furniture.”
The renewal of these displays represents another step in the ongoing modernisation of Benidorm’s public spaces. “This first phase is being carried out along some of the city’s main access routes, improving its image and enhancing its urban appeal,” Muñoz said. Over the coming months, the project will continue to complete the replacement of 100% of the municipality’s freestanding advertising displays, bringing the comprehensive renewal of this type of urban furniture to completion.
