The Town Charter of 1325 stars in the public reading of 'Dia de les Lletres Valencianes' in Benidorm

21 November 2025
La Carta de Poblament de 1325 protagoniza la lectura pública del ‘Dia de les Lletres Valencianes’ en Benidorm

The esplanade outside Parc de Foietes was once again the setting this Friday for the commemoration of Valencian Literature Day in Benidorm. This year's event focused on two works of entirely local origin: the Town Charter granted by Bernat de Sarrià in 1325 and the poetry collection "De la Cala al Racó", written by Benidorm native Josep Zaragoza Pérez, known as Pep "El Carreró."

The city's mayor, Toni Pérez, participated in this public reading along with the Councillor for Historical and Cultural Heritage, Ana Pellicer; numerous members of the City Council; and 4th-year ESO students from Mediterrània Institute.

‘Dia de les Lletres Valencianes’ (Valencian Literature Day) is celebrated on November 20th in commemoration of the publication of the first edition of ‘Tirant lo Blanc’ by Joanot Martorell in 1490. Over the past few years, the city has commemorated this event with various readings of texts in Valencian, both prose and verse. This year, the focus is on the Charter of Settlement, coinciding with its 700th anniversary, as well as on this work so closely associated with Benidorm, ‘El Carreró’, as Mayor Toni Pérez explained to the students who joined in the celebration.

The mayor began reading the founding document of Benidorm, after which members of the City Council and students took turns continuing to read the Charter of Settlement and some of the poems from ‘De la Cala al Racó’ (From the Cove to the Corner), such as ‘Les Penyes’, ‘L’Illa’, ‘El Puig Campana’, and ‘Un dia en l'almadrava’ (A Day at the Tuna Fishing Trap), among others, before the attentive gaze of their classmates.

Both Mayor Pérez and the Councillor for Historical and Cultural Heritage thanked the students and teachers of IES Mediterrània for their participation in this celebration, which continued with a reading activity led by Eva Andújar.
