Toni Pérez and Minister Arcadi España announce the start of works on the underpass of the TRAM on Beniardá Avenue after the summer

18 February 2022
Alcaldía

The Mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, and the Minister for Territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility, Arcadi Spain, have announced today that the works to create an underpass on the TRAM track on Beniardá Avenue will begin this year after the summer and that they will have an execution period of 16 months, with which the forecast indicates that they will be completed before the end of 2023.

The mayor and the minister visited the Benidorm TRAM station this afternoon, accompanied by the general director of FGV, Anaïs Menguzzato, and members of the municipal corporation, to see 'in situ' the actions to improve the accessibility of facilities carried out at Benidorm station.

The construction of the underpass will involve an investment of 6,243,192.42 euros and is now in the bid evaluation phase, prior to the award of the work.
The action will allow the transformation of the current level crossing into a pedestrian crossing, protected by light and acoustic signals and which will have an underpass for vehicles. The new crossing will have a typical section with two lanes in each direction with a central median, while the itineraries for cyclists and pedestrians will remain on the surface.

The work will culminate with the execution of secondary service lanes that allow access to Estación street, private plots and the attached municipal park and ride. The operation is financed by the European Union through Next Generation funds.

Toni Pérez has highlighted the "alliance" between the City Council and the Ministry to offer "all the facilities to make this investment" that solves, according to Pérez, "mobility problems looking at environmental sustainability with the avoidance of CO2 emissions, as well as economic and social sustainability.

The mayor has highlighted "the great connection that the avenue fosters with the rest of the region and the great labour mobility of thousands of people who come and go every day". For this reason, he has described the planned action as “intelligent and expected”.

Pérez has indicated, however, that "no work is exempt from inconvenience", but has underlined that once the financing with European funds is resolved "we can undertake it and in the winter or Christmas of 2023 it will be a reality, which we will applaud from Benidorm ”.

This access to the city supports around 26,000 vehicles per day, according to calculations made by the City Council and the Ministry, which has made it "the entrance with the largest number of vehicles to the city".

For his part, Minister Arcadi Spain has described the action as "fundamental" and has indicated that once completed "it will allow breaking a barrier to access the city both for residents and for anyone who comes to work or to do tourism".
