Students from the Gabriel Miró and La Cala schools plant 200 specimens in El Moralet for Arbor Day
Around a hundred 5th and 6th-grade primary school students from the Gabriel Miró and La Cala schools have celebrated today in the Foia del Ca district, in the area around El Moralet, the traditional Arbor Day, a day in which young people students plant specimens of various native species and that this year celebrates the 20th anniversary since this activity began in 2003.
The activity, organized jointly by the Departments of Education and the Environment in the plot called 'Bosc dels Xiquets', was attended by the mayor Toni Pérez, the councilors of both areas, Maite Moreno and Mónica Gómez, as well as members of the corporation.
Toni Pérez pointed out that Arbor Day is "a fundamental activity to raise awareness and sensitize society, especially the youngest". An initiative that has been carried out every year in Benidorm since 2003, "in which generations of students have cultivated specimens of the native flora." Today around 200 specimens of ephedra, fan palm, rosemary, creeping rosemary, oleander, stone pine, and rhamnus alaternus have been planted.
Today there was also the participation of the municipal technical services and the staff of the Employment Workshop in the specialty of Gardening and Sports.
The objective, Pérez said, is "to take care of the environment and complement these actions with those that we also carry out in the urban fabric". In this sense, he specified the more than 6,000 trees planted in recent years. “It is a contribution to the planet, a contribution to the environment. The air is improved, CO2 emissions are reduced and, in short, we make environmental sustainability” stated the mayor.
Toni Pérez highlighted that these actions also pursue "social and economic sustainability" so that minors "be nature lovers and ambassadors of things well done" and therefore "this day is celebrated in style with children to contribute to making the environment and Benidorm better every day”.
