Benidorm will not have to buy water after having guaranteed the supply after the rains

31 January 2017
Benidorm no tendrá que comprar agua al tener garantizado el abastecimiento tras las lluvias

The last two episodes of rainfall also guarantee irrigation in 2017 and make unnecessary the transfer of 7.5 hectometres for the region.

The city proposes that each municipality reinvest the saving of the transfer in improving its network of drinking water

Benidorm and the other municipalities of the Marina Baixa will not have to buy water this year for water supply and irrigation. The two episodes of heavy rains in mid-December and January 18-23 have meant "recovery" of the reservoirs and aquifers of the region, which makes it unnecessary to resort to external inputs, as reported Elaborated by the technicians of the Water Consortium of the Marina Baixa.

That is why this agency discarded the transfer of 7.5 cubic hectometres that two months ago asked the Hydrographic Confederation of Júcar (CHJ), and has lowered the rate for consumption. A reduction that leaves this quota at 0.2951 euros per cubic meter, compared to the 0.4806 fixed in November, and which was approved at the extraordinary session of the General Board of the Consortium held on Tuesday in the plenary hall of the City Council Of Benidorm and which has presided over the mayor, Toni Pérez.

Not having to buy external water for the improvement of the water situation of the region will allow to reduce the economic contribution that each municipality has to make to the Consortium. In the case of Benidorm, this contribution goes from the 5.9 million euros of prevesion in November to the slightly less than 4 million approved today.

In light of this improvement, Pérez has launched "a message of tranquility", and stressed that "investments that have been implemented in recent times allow us to maximize the use of resources" generated by the two episodes of rain.

The mayor said that in view of the results that have given these actions "we must continue to invest in improving our water supply, collection and general water systems so that when there are times as good as the current or so bad as we have lived two months ago, we have the capacity to guarantee the supply as we are doing.

Pérez has indicated that it is necessary to continue in "this line of work", and hence that in the heart of the meeting has launched a proposal for "the savings that will generate in municipal accounts the need not to purchase external contributions , Devote each locality to investments in its potable water networks. A measure that will reduce or eliminate the turbidity problems in the water that have occurred in some municipalities of the region after the two episodes of rain, and that Benidorm has not suffered because Benidorm has its own water treatment plant.
