For the fourth consecutive year, Benidorm has joined the summer promotion and awareness campaign for glass recycling at Ecovidrio, with which the City Council actively collaborates. An initiative that involves the catering establishments of the city and that is presented under the name 'Movimiento Banderas Verdes'. In this new edition, Benidorm aims to repeat as the city with the largest number of participating establishments and with the best recycling figures, according to the mayor, Toni Pérez, at a press conference with the Councilor for the Environment, Mónica Gómez. , and the Ecovidrio area manager, Roberto Fuentes.

Pérez pointed out that "Benidorm has been improving its glass recycling results, until reaching percentages well above the average". In fact, in Benidorm in 2018 was 56.4 kilos of recycled glass per inhabitant, compared to 17.3 kilos of regional average. These figures "show that Benidorm is a city committed to the environment and sustainability; commitment has been embodied as one of the five axes that have allowed us to become the first Smart Tourist Destination certified world. "

The mayor said that "with the endorsement of being the city that recycled the most" in the previous summer campaign of Ecovidrio, "the forecast for this year is to reach the 440 collaborating hotel establishments, improving by 25% the data of 2018 " He has also been convinced that Benidorm will be one of the nine cities in Spain - and one of the two in the Valencian Community - to obtain the new Green Flag, a distinctive created by Ecovidrio to recognize the municipalities most committed to the fight against climate change and coastal protection through the recycling of glass containers, which will be delivered at the end of the year. From the start, Benidorm has been part of the campaign to promote the 'Green Flag Movement', made by Ecovidrio on social networks.

For his part, the manager of Ecovidrio in Levante area has stressed that Benidorm's recycling figures "are the result of the joint effort of the City Council, establishments and citizens"; and has stressed that the "involvement" and commitment of the bars and restaurants that from one year to another "continue to preserve and use throughout the year the means that were provided in previous editions of the campaign."

On the operation of the campaign to raise awareness and promote recycling, Ecovidrio will make more than 1,300 training and information visits to establishments, special recycling bins will be delivered, new vinyled containers will be installed with summer motifs and collection frequencies will be increased .

Fuentes explained that the premises most committed to the recycling of glass containers and that reach higher score, will receive as a prize a master class with Quique Dacosta, recognized chef with three Michelin Stars.

In addition, he recalled that more than 30% of all glass is generated in the summer, and that more than 52% of single-use glass come from the hospitality sector.
