Toni Pérez and students from the IES 'Pere Mª Orts' and 'Beatriu Fajardo' connect with Antarctica
The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, and students from IES 'Pere Mª Orts' and 'Beatriu Fajardo' have participated today in a connection with the Spanish Antarctic Base 'Gabriel de Castilla' operated by the Army, for scientific research, on Deception Island, between the South Shetland archipelago and the Antarctic Peninsula.
The head of communications for BAE Gabriel de Castilla, Captain Mario Muñoz Fernández, a native of Benidorm, together with scientists from the University of Cádiz, have explained the operation of the Antarctic campaign and addressed the questions and issues formulated later.
Toni Pérez has congratulated the soldier from Benidorm who has the honor of being the third in those latitudes, after the then also captain José María Urgell and the sailor José Ramón Hernández Rubio who have preceded him in previous campaigns.
The mayor has been interested in environmental and sustainability issues as well as in the monitoring that is carried out on the impact of Tourism. Muñoz has pointed out both the continued presence of Arctic cruise tourism in the same bay of Deception Island as well as the verified evidence of the arrival at those latitudes of contamination derived through ocean currents.
Pérez has indicated, as a module for reflection, that "we must be aware that the sea begins at our feet and we must take extreme care of the environment".
To questions from the students from Benidorm, Captain Muñoz, who studied at the IES 'Pere Maria Orts', pointed out "the pride of having been chosen for this campaign and the professional challenge of being able to develop there everything learned during so many years".
Toni Pérez, for his part, has highlighted the interest of this videoconference that brings us closer to the frozen continent and makes us participants in the research that is being carried out and the importance of preserving the planet by being active in sustainability”.
