Benidorm begins tomorrow the complete replacement of Poniente beach walkway

Benidorm City Council will begin tomorrow the complete replacement of the pedestrian walkway on the Poniente beach, an action that is part of the maintenance and improvement of infrastructures and pavements that the consistory has been developing.

The intervention will consist of two phases. First, the current footbridge will be removed, the excess material of which will be sent to the eco-park. In the second phase, the new one will be implemented, made of technological wood. Toni Pérez, the mayor, visited the construction site accompanied by the Councilor for Beaches, Mónica Gómez, the Councilor for Public Space, José Ramón González de Zárate, and several members of the government team.

The current footbridge, which runs parallel to the promenade, is in a state of conservation "in very poor condition", as explained by the mayor Toni Pérez, who added that it "supports very intense pedestrian traffic and its condition causes inconvenience to visitors users, in addition to not being consistent with the image we want for Benidorm”.

Pérez stressed that it is "a fundamental work for us" and that work will be carried out "taking into account the calendar and to end the month of June with the finished catwalk".

The chosen material, technological wood, is a stable flooring made up of high-quality elements and great features, without being a fixed installation, so that it can be removed when cleaning tasks have to be undertaken. The intervention will affect an approximate area of 5,400 square meters and 1.5 linear kilometers and has a budget of 1,672,457.57 euros, which will be borne by municipal resources, given the refusal of the Generalitat and the central government to undertake the performance and once it already has the authorization of the Directorate of Coasts.

In this sense, Pérez has valued the "great work of the departments involved so that the start of the works is a reality because we do not even know how long we have been fighting this action." The mayor has remarked, about the position of the Generalitat and the central government that, "although it is not our competence, it is our responsibility and that is why we want it to be a catwalk that is as aesthetic as possible and not at all dangerous as if it was until now in some stretch ”.

And it is that the passage of time and the very nature of the catwalk material mean that its life is short "and that is why we have decided to act to improve the image of an area with a very important emblematic value for us" added the mayor.

"We continue in this way with the commitment undertaken years ago for sustainability, accessibility, and the improvement of mobility so that all the works that are carried out will have those objectives set," said the mayor, who also specified that the fact that the current walkway is made of slats "makes it very difficult for wheelchairs or baby carriages to pass", which is why the new infrastructure "in addition to being a walkway with a stable surface, will have the width established by the accessibility".

The aesthetics will be similar to the current catwalk, although it will gain stability, sustainability, and resistance to the effects of the weather.

The completion of the works is set for June and these will be carried out by the company Levantina, Ingeniería y Construcción S.L. which was awarded this performance.
