The Municipal Library hosts an exhibition with a selection of fossils of the Paleontological Heritage

An exhibition of 15 fossils of special value for its perfect conservation, property of the Town Hall, can be visited from today in the Central Library of Benidorm. The councilor of Historical Heritage, Ana Pellicer and representatives of other municipal groups, have been able to contemplate the unique examples and explanations that the person in charge of the exhibition, Flora Ruíz, has exposed on each one of them during the inauguration.
"A show," said Pellicer, "which is accompanied by informative explanatory panels and that is very didactic for all", especially for "the smallest ones we invite to visit the exhibition in the Library". Ana Pellicer thanked and congratulated the entire department "for the great work they have done" and stated that the exhibition will remain open until the end of the summer.
For its part, Flora Ruíz, in relation to the explanatory panels, pointed out that in one of them, the main one, is detailed "how a fossil is formed" and other "curiosities" like "geological eras." In addition, five others are exhibited, with specimens that can be seen in the showcases. The municipal inventory has 267 copies that are guarded in the Municipal Archive, dependent on Historic Heritage. The municipal technique has specified that it is expected the attendance "of a lot of children, mainly because the language is adapted so that any profane person, who does not know the geology, can understand them" and enjoy the exhibition.
The municipal paleontological collection has copies that have been ceded for decades by neighbors and visitors of Benidorm. Much of this collection "could have been donated by the parish priest Luis Duart," suggests Ruiz, since the priest, a great lover of archeology and paleontology was the promoter of various excavations throughout the province of Alicante, including those of Tossal Of La Cala de Benidorm, so "probably" some specimens come from there since this archaeological complex is located on marine materials of what in geological literature is defined as 'Flysch', "deposited in marine environments of the lower Oligocene Ruiz said that "it is very rich in marine fossils, and magnificent specimens of corals, bivalves, gastropods, echinoderms and even fish, shark, reptiles and marine mammals can be found. ".
The person in charge of the exhibition has encouraged anyone who has a fossil and does not know what to do with it, to deposit it in the Municipal Archive to study it and include it in the municipal catalog and that can be enjoyed by everyone in exhibitions such as today Has opened in the Central Library of Benidorm.
