Hand in hand with the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, the itinerant exhibition 'The Towers of the Alhambra' makes a stop in the city

The monumental sculptures of Cristóbal Gabarrón arrive in Benidorm

The streets of Benidorm premiere this week a new sculpture exhibition at street level by the Department of Historical and Cultural Heritage and the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències. This is the itinerant exhibition 'The Towers of the Alhambra' by the Murcian artist Cristóbal Gabarrón; 16 monumental sculptures that have arrived in the city today.

The assembly of the sculptures is already underway at Plaza de la Hispanidad, Gambo street and Avenida del Mediterráneo, the same location that was already used for the exhibition 'Galaxia Hung', which "last summer aroused enormous interest among the resident population and tourists who on their walks through Benidorm came across the colourful and striking sculptures of Hung Yi, as will now happen with the art of Cristóbal Gabarrón”, as pointed out by the Councilor for Historical and Cultural Heritage, Ana Pellicer.

According to Pellicer, “eight sculptures from the series are going to be located on Avenida del Mediterráneo; four, in the Plaza de la Hispanidad; and the remaining four, on Gambo Street”. Some sculptures are "made of polychrome fibreglass, which stands out both for their colour and their size, which ranges from 3.30 meters to almost 6 meters depending on the pieces."

The councillor for Historical and Cultural Heritage explained that "this series of sculptures are inspired by the well-known Arab palace of La Alhambra, and more specifically in its towers, decisive throughout the history of the fortification".

Pellicer has highlighted that “the works by Cristóbal Gabarrón are pure public and urban art, hence they are designed to be exhibited on the street, integrating into the environment, seeking closeness with the viewer. And that is exactly what the artist is going to find in Benidorm, an urban and cosmopolitan environment that embraces his work and serves as a loudspeaker for his message of peaceful coexistence between cultures”.

The author himself "will be able to see and experience his exhibition in Benidorm firsthand, since it is planned that this Thursday, June 16, he will accompany us to tour the exhibition and explain the details of each work to the attendees." A guided visit, he has moved, that "will start at 10:30 am at Plaza de la Hispanidad and that is open to the public."
