23 February 2017
Minuto de silencio en Benidorm para condenar cuatro nuevas víctimas de violencia machista

16 women have been killed so far this year by their partners or ex-partners

This morning a new minute of silence has been observed at the gates of the Benidorm Town Hall to condemn the death, in the last hours, of four women at the hands of their partners and ex-partners. The mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, and the councilor for Equality, Angela Llorca, have spearheaded the protest, which has also been attended by numerous members of the corporation, members of the Neighborhood Council, municipal workers and citizens.

The latest cases of gender-based violence have taken place in Badajoz, Barcelona, Valencia and Gandía, bringing to 16 the number of fatalities so far this year 2017, turning this year's beginning into the period of time in recent years in which more women have been victims of sexist violence.

In Villanueva del Fresno (Badajoz) a woman was stabbed in the neck by her husband last Sunday and died a few hours ago. In the town of Santa Perpetua de Mogola, the body of a 34-year-old woman, killed by her ex-partner, 54, who had a restraining order, appeared in the street.

Two have been victims in the Valencian Community in the last hours. In Valencia, a 48-year-old woman died last day after being thrown down the stairs by her 55-year-old partner. In Gandía, also on the 21st, a 47-year-old Civil Guard, removed from the body, was suffocated by her partner in her home.

At noon residents of Els Tolls have also observed a minute of silence at the doors of the administrative extension located in the neighborhood as a sign of condemnation for these latest cases of gender violence.
