The FVMP rewards with a grant the campaign against Tiger mosquito in Benidorm

28 September 2016
La FVMP premia con una subvención la campaña de Benidorm contra el mosquito tigre

Hidraqua has acted in the sewer and scuppers

The Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FVMP) has awarded a grant to the campaign carried out by the department of Health, in collaboration with the Environment department for prevention and fight against the Asian Tiger mosquito,(Aedes albopictus), in the town of Benidorm. The City Council will receive 6,369 euros to cover part of the investment made for the intensification of work specifically against this dipteran insect, that regardless of the pain they produce their bites could transmit diseases such as dengue, chikungunya or zika. Control tasks were intensified in spring in the sewer and scuppers of the town, critical points that without proper treatment, were suspicious to promote the reproduction of the insect. These actions have been undertaken by the concessionaire responsible for maintaining the sewer, Hidraqua, under the direction of the department of Health.

20,000 leaflets for homes

Complementing the campaign the council printed 20,000 leaflets to inform users of the presence of the Tiger mosquito in the municipality, and how to act to control its spread. The leaflets also came to all homes with the water bills. The department of Health has reported the success of the initiative and has found a significant decline of the insect in the municipality. The actions taken by the City Council and arising awareness of citizenship, following the instructions of the health authorities, have been key to the success of a campaign.
