Tons of containers, disposable products, bags and microplastics are thrown into the sea every year
An exhibition to save the sea from plastic
The Councilor for the Environment and Beaches, Mónica Gómez, together with the scientific director of the Institute of Litoral Ecology, Gabriel Soler and technicians from the institution and the City Council have toured the exhibition that has opened in Benidorm but will later be transferred to other locations from the Costa Blanca, institutes and universities.
“Plastic, microplastics - Mónica Gómez has said - constitute a serious environmental problem that plagues the planet. This exhibition is intended to attract the attention, especially of the youngest, and seek social involvement to reduce and eradicate its use in our daily lives. Every year tons of containers, disposable products, bags and microplastics are thrown into the sea that affect the balance of the planet. We must not allow it ”.
Gómez recalled that Benidorm depends "closely on its beaches and the environment" so "we must all join forces to reduce pollution, starting with people and then public administrations and companies." The mayor has emphasized that "a good way to take sides" would be "by proactively changing our consumption habits" to achieve the eradication of microplastics in the sea.
For his part, Gabriel Soler, has insisted on the objective of raising awareness in society. For this, the exhibition has been divided into two parts. "In the first - he has detailed - the problem of microplastics in the marine environment is exposed" and in the second "we talk about what each of us can do to prevent microplastics in the sea."
Soler has positioned itself in favor of manufacturing less plastic in the world. "What we have to do as users - he has said - is to demand fewer products that come with plastics." It is important, he has insisted. "Try to recycle or reuse as much as possible and try to use other elements in our daily lives that may be alternatives" to its use.
The exhibition ‘Sea or plastic? You decide ’is made up of panels and multi-cube totems, accompanied by an explanatory video. Admission is completely free and will remain until the end of August at La Casa del Fester.
