Benidorm City Council is improving the facilities and accessibility of ‘Mare de Déu del Sofratge’ cemetery, the oldest in the city. The mayor, Toni Pérez, and the councillor of the department, Ángela Llorca, have checked the works, in which 9,959.51 euros have been invested and which will be completed in the coming weeks.
Llorca explained that "as it is the oldest cemetery, it needs constant repairs and maintenance." For this reason, "in recent years various actions have been carried out, for of them aimed at improving the accessibility of the cemetery, eliminating curbs and progressively replacing stairs with ramps". Following the same line, "with this investment, among other improvements, two new ramps have been created, providing full accessibility to all areas of the enclosure".
The councilor has indicated that “an important part of the neighbors who regularly attend the cemetery are elderly people and in some cases with mobility problems, for whom, therefore, the presence of stairs made it difficult to move around. autonomously by the cemetery. Now with the creation of new ramps that replace the stairs or that coexist with them, the use of the facilities has been greatly facilitated for these people ”.
In addition to the new ramps, the stone pavement has also been grouting at the points where it was damaged, thus avoiding the risk of tripping.
Llorca has pointed out that "at the moment they are working on the perimeter walls of the cemetery, specifically on the right wall of the upper part, where it was difficult to act since the pantheons are very close." Likewise, “to improve the aesthetics and image of the cemetery, the graves that were abandoned or that had no maintenance have been closed with concrete slabs”.
The councilor recalled that "since 2015, every year has been invested in improving the facilities of 'Mare de Déu del Sofratge' cemetery and also in 'Sant Jaume', which once the extension works are carried out will allow to cover for decades the burial needs of Benidorm ”.
