The canine unit of the Local Police collaborates with the educational community in prevention of drug consumption

16 January 2018
La unidad canina de la Policía Local colabora con la comunidad educativa en la prevención del consumo de drogas

After the good results obtained this summer with the implementation of the Canine Unit of the Local Police of Benidorm, the Department of Public Security has expanded the 'staff' with one more dog that will join the service in the coming weeks. With this are already three dogs in the Unit, to which we must add the possibility of having one or two animals more, if the needs of the service require it.

The Councilor for Citizen Security, Lorenzo Martínez, has assessed as "very positive" the work done by the officers and their trained dogs, which has allowed "tripling the number of complaints" that have gone from 109 in 2016 to 314 in 2017. However, the councillor has emphasized that the true success of the canine unit "is prevention." Martínez recalled that in the decision to increase the endowment have weighed "and a lot" the requests of "our neighbors and the demands of the educational community" because the final goal we set is "to mentalize and raise awareness among young people so that do not fall into the consumption of narcotics. "

Martínez has remarked "the very good acceptance" that the unit has had in Benidorm. "I think," he said, "that with the presence in the parks, near the high schools and with the talks we held in schools in collaboration with the National Police, we are achieving our goal that is that children do sport and to lead a healthy lifestyle model ".

Better service

For his part, the Chief Commissioner of the Local Police, Juan Fuertes, has emphasized the training received by the officers and their dogs. "Everyone has the specific courses in drug detention and some also of impact and explosives." Fuertes also recalled that all police officers in the unit have the qualifications required by the regulations.

About the work that will be developed from the Canine Unit of the Local Police, after the night experience in leisure, pedestrian and commercial areas. Juan Fuertes has announced that he intends to "give a greater service". For this purpose, some days will be transferred to the morning and afternoon shifts in the vicinity of the school centers "as requested by the educational community" which has shown concern that in some centers "there could be some unwanted activity". It will also continue with the surveillance in parks, squares, gardens and bus station "where there are a lot of people".
