Supporting the claim of the two local associations to match the conditions of the taxi to those of VTC platforms

Benidorm's government calls for the Taxi Act to be amended to enable the sector to have 7 seater vehicles

23 October 2019
El gobierno de Benidorm pide que se modifique la Ley del Taxi para que el sector pueda disponer de vehículos de 7 plazas

The government team of Benidorm will present a motion to the next plenary urging the Department of Territorial Policy, Public Works and Mobility to modify the Taxi Law of the Valencian Community so that the sector can “have 7seater taxi vehicles , including the driver. ” The Councilor for Mobility, José Ramón González de Zárate, said that "this request is part of the two associations of the city taxi", which represent 232 licenses, and added that with this motion "what we do is to support the taxi associations and say 'yes' to your proposal because it is positive not only for Benidorm taxis but throughout the Valencian Community ”.

De Zárate has stressed that with this modification “a better service would be given to users” and “the conditions of the taxis enjoyed by VTC platforms would be matched”.

In this regard, he has clarified that VTCs - whose licenses are the responsibility of the Generalitat - are allowed to “move seven people in the same vehicle”, while the regional legislation “does not allow taxis to transport more than four passengers” . This circumstance "leaves the taxi sector at a competitive disadvantage compared to VTCs, since it cannot perform certain services".

From there, the councilor added, that "we ask for a modification of the Law so that the taxi sector can have larger vehicles, with 7 seats, thus equating their situation to those of the VTC."

De Zárate has indicated that, as the taxi drivers have moved from Benidorm taxi associations, “there is an increasing demand for services with origin or destination in the city by groups that exceed four people” and could be carried out by a single 7-seater car taxi to make the proposed change possible.
