Benidorm will approve the channeling and integration project of Murtal ravine on Monday

29 October 2021
Barranco Murtal

The Local Government Board (JGL) of Benidorm will approve the project for channeling and urban integration of El Murtal ravine next Monday, a work that will have a base bidding budget of 5,024,697.51 euros (VAT included).
The approval of the project will be published in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP) and a period of twenty days will be opened to present allegations. During this period, the document will be exposed to the public on the municipal website www.benidorm.org. To carry out its execution, it will be necessary to have the authorization of the Provincial Coastal Service and Júcar Hydrographic Confederation, subordinated to the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Coastal Service of the Generalitat Valenciana.
Currently, the ravine "is not properly channeled" in the section where the works will be carried out, as stated in the technical report that accompanies the approval proposal. In addition, the existing bridge on Avenida de La Vila Joiosa, which runs on a 10-meter high embankment, "represents a hydraulic obstacle to the flow of the ravine itself and a barrier to physical accessibility and mobility."
The objective of the project, as explained by the Councilor for Public Space, José Ramón González de Zárate, is "to integrate the hydraulic solution for channeling the ravine, to eliminate the passage under the La Vila Joiosa avenue bridge by creating a roundabout that takes into account the planned urban growth and urban integration of Calle Murtal ”. The councilor pointed out that "we have a significant problem of flooding in this area when heavy rains occur and that is why it is necessary and essential to undertake this powerful work."
Taking into account the precedents, the project has chosen to adopt as the design flow the one corresponding to a peak flow of 80 m3 / s. For this reason, a 500 m3 tank will be built as it is considered "sufficient to retain the first wash waters from rain runoff". This reservoir will be connected to the drainage network and to a spillway connected to the channel in the event of an overflow.
Likewise, it will be necessary to build masonry walls in three perimeter areas to protect landscaped areas and slopes from La Vila Joiosa avenue.
According to the project, the works could affect the potable and waste water networks, as well as the telecommunications, electricity and gas networks that should be diverted from their current location.
As for urban integration works, they will consist of replacing the existing link with an intersection without structures. It will be used to order traffic and will allow permeability towards Murtal Street, which could not be reached by bus. González de Zárate also pointed out that “with these works, drainage is very significantly improved by eliminating the dam that constitutes the embankment of La Vila Joiosa avenue itself.
These actions, the councilor has specified, will also reach Calle Murtal, "which will be covered and redeveloped once the channeling of the ravine has been introduced and the treatment of the pavements of Paseo de Poniente will continue in its connection with Vicente Llorca Alós ”.
