The city collected more than 1.1 million kilos of glass in June, July and August, almost 1% more than last year

Benidorm revalidates the Green Flag and once again exceeds glass recycling figures in summer

01 October 2024
Benidorm revalida la Bandera Verde y vuelve a superar los datos de reciclaje de vidrio en verano

Once again, Benidorm has revalidated the Green Flag awarded each year by Ecovidrio, which rewards the efforts of the local hospitality industry and city councils in recycling glass containers and fighting climate change. This non-profit entity managing glass container recycling has communicated this to Benidorm City Council, after confirming that the city increased the total volume of glass container collection for recycling during June, July and August.

The city won this award in 2021 and 2022 and revalidated it in 2023, so it has now achieved it for the fourth consecutive time. According to Ecovidrio, obtaining the recognition is due to the teamwork of the council, the citizens of the town and the hoteliers, which has allowed Benidorm to “continue taking steps forward in the transition towards the circular economy and the fight against climate change”, as well as having become “an example of green recovery in the hospitality industry”.

More than 300 hospitality establishments in the city have participated, contributing their grain of sand in this fifth edition of the #MovimientoBanderasVerdes. An initiative that rewards the commitment of the municipalities and their hotel sector to the recycling of glass containers, environmental protection and sustainable development.

Thus, according to Ecovidrio data, Benidorm collected 1,136,777 kilos of glass in June, July and August of this year, an increase of 0.9% compared to the same period in 2023. The recycling has allowed the town to obtain a score of 1,076 points and be among the first municipalities in the Valencian Community to get the Green Flag in 2023 and one of the few to revalidate it.

The person responsible for the Environment department thanked "the massive response once again from the hospitality sector, the key to achieving this distinction." Benidorm has competed with up to 40 Valencian municipalities and at a national level more than 150 municipalities from five autonomous communities and 15,000 hospitality establishments participated.
