The City Council intends to continue expanding this network as municipal branch offices increase

Benidorm has mobile defibrillators in twelve public buldings

23 January 2024
Benidorm dispone de doce edificios públicos equipados con desfibriladores móviles

The municipality of Benidorm already has twelve cardioprotected public buildings, that is, they have a mobile semi-automatic defibrillator to be used in an emergency due to cardiorespiratory failure. Added to this figure are those found in police stations, which are also included in the new vehicles acquired for the Local Police and those that have been incorporated into some hotels in the city.

The defibrillators are located in the following offices: City Hall (Local Police checkpoint and entrance hall), entrance hall to the Palau d'Esports L'Illa de Benidorm, offices of the Guillermo Amor Sports City, locker rooms at Antonio López football fields, Municipal Market, the hall of the Local Police headquarters, La Torreta Social Center, José Llorca Linares Social Center, Tanit Social Center, Cultural Center and the School for Adults.

The Councilor for Health, Ana Pellicer, recalled in this regard that the equipment with these elements in public offices "began in 2015 and has been expanded depending on the needs raised." The objective, she said, is “for them to be used as a basic element in the event of a cardiorespiratory arrest that occurs in the municipality.”

In the opinion of the councillor, "it is essential" to have a network of this type of equipment throughout the municipality "so that they can be used in case of need and before the arrival of health services because survival in this type of episode is minimal if more than ten minutes pass since the stop occurs and there is no attention.”

Pellicer has stressed the importance of “citizens and people, in general, knowing where the defibrillator equipment is located to go there in the shortest possible time since it has been shown that they are very effective, in addition to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) manoeuvres.” . These devices only act when they detect that there is cardiac arrest or ventricular fibrillation, so “they are very safe elements.”

The Benidorm City Council, the Health Councilor has indicated, intends to “continue expanding this network as there are more public agencies and depending on the needs that we detect, as we have always done.” Likewise, Pellicer wanted to clarify that the equipment "has a guarantee of operation 24 hours a day because there is continuous maintenance of the same." In that sense, she specified that a company in charge of maintenance “periodically carries out tests to guarantee that everyone is in perfect condition for use.”
