European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism 2025

Benidorm destination has been awarded the ‘European Green Pioneer for Smart Tourism 2025’, an award sponsored by the European Commission that recognises the city’s exceptional commitment to shaping the future of sustainable and innovative tourism. Benidorm has been selected as the winning city after defending its candidacy against the other six European cities.

What does this recognition mean?
This award highlights the innovative strategies of destinations to mitigate the environmental impact of tourism while optimising the experience for visitors and residents.

The award-winning cities must demonstrate excellence in key areas, such as:

✅ Environmental sustainability: biodiversity conservation, efficient water management and reduction of CO₂ emissions.
✅ Sustainable mobility: infrastructure that promotes public transport, bicycle use and reduced traffic.
✅ Energy efficiency: use of renewable energy, efficient lighting and reduction of energy consumption.
✅ Universal accessibility: environments adapted so that all people regardless of their abilities can enjoy the destination.
✅ Sustainable economic and social development: strategies to ensure that tourism benefits the local community and promotes quality employment.
