Direct Assessment to Obtain the Elementary Music Certificate

04 November 2025
CONSERV

Requirements

All students who have not completed their elementary music studies, but have completed part of them, may take the exams for the direct award of the Elementary Music Education Certificate, as well as those who aspire to obtain the Elementary Music Education Certificate, regardless of age.

Those who have begun formal elementary music studies and wish to take the exams must submit their registration application to the conservatory where their academic record is held. To take these exams at another centre, the receiving centre will request the transfer of the record from the originating centre.

Individuals who have not completed formal elementary music studies may register to take the exam at any of the public elementary and professional conservatories that offer elementary music studies. The conservatory where the exam is taken will open a personal academic file that will allow the applicant to take the exam for the direct award of the Elementary Music Education Certificate.

TEST STRUCTURE

The tests for obtaining the Elementary Music Education Certificate directly will consist of two exercises. The educational centre will establish the order in which the parts and exercises of the test are carried out.

Instrumental Speciality Assessment 1

1.1 Instrument-appropriate sight-reading

1.2 Performance of three pieces from a list of six, submitted by the student, belonging to different styles. The student will compile the list of six pieces, choosing from those provided for each instrumental speciality, as suggested by the educational institution. Participants will submit copies of the pieces they will perform to the panel, as well as the original scores.

The panel may accept other works that, in its opinion, are comparable to those published on the list and that are at the same level or higher than those proposed for the entrance exam for professional studies in the corresponding speciality. If a submitted piece consists of several movements, the panel may instruct the applicant to perform one or more movements. Students who submit pieces with accompaniment are required to perform them with accompaniment, providing their own accompanist. The performance will assess the student's ability to play the pieces from memory and their level of difficulty.

2. Music Theory Test. The test/exam will be divided into two parts: a theoretical part and a practical part

2.1 Theoretical testIt will consist of two exercises:

2.1.A Auditory capacity test. Performance of a musical dictation in one voice with the time signatures of 2/4, 3/4 or 4/4.

2.1.B Test of theoretical knowledge of musical language, written, and with five questions proposed by the tribunal.

2.2 Practical test. It will also consist of two exercises:

2.2.A Test of rhythmic reading in treble clef on the second line and in bass clef on the fourth line.

2.2.B Test of singing in the key of C Major.

GRADING CRITERIA

Each panel will evaluate the test, section, or exercise assigned to it, assigning a grade between zero and ten, with two decimal places.

A candidate will be considered to have passed the test upon obtaining a minimum grade of five points.

The tests are eliminatory; therefore, the Elementary Studies Certificate will only be awarded when the candidate passes all the exercises and sections that comprise the test. A candidate will be considered to have passed each section or exercise upon obtaining a minimum grade of five points. Candidates will also take the different tests and sections to pass the previous ones.

The conservatories, by virtue of their pedagogical autonomy, will establish the criteria for weighting the sections and exercises when calculating the final grade for the test, once a student has passed the different sections and exercises.
