Benidorm has achieved the Accessible Tourism Destination 2018 award, which is delivered annually by Thyssenkrupp Home Solutions, and which distinguishes cities that bet on tourism without barriers. An award that Benidorm will share with Cartagena (Murcia) after both places starred in a very close final that ended yesterday.

According to Thyssenkrupp on its website, "after the technical problems that made voting impossible during the last hour of the campaign and as a result of the efforts of both cities, winners were declared as Accessible Tourism Destination 2018, Benidorm and Cartagena".

The mayor, Toni Pérez, thanked "all the people who have given their support to Benidorm during all the phases of the contest, and especially in this final stretch of national character in which popular involvement has been very important", surpassing the 45,000 citizen support, according to the data published on the Thyssenkrupp website.

Pérez said that "in this process those who live here and those who visit us have shown once again that believe in a city without barriers, opt for universal accessibility and share the effort that is made both from the City Council and the private initiative to achieve that goal. " In this regard, he recalled that Benidorm has a comprehensive accessibility plan and has implemented successive plans to eliminate architectural barriers throughout the city. In addition, it was a pioneer in points of accessible beaches, has routes for people with functional diversity and has a wide range of accommodation, trade and catering adapted and accessible.

In the coming weeks the day and place of the act for the delivery of this award Accessible Tourism Destination 2018, which in previous editions have received the cities of Cáceres (2014), Lugo (2015), Avilés (2016) and Soria (2017) will be specified as first classified.
