This intervention achieves significant energy savings and greater light intensity

Urban Scene renews the lighting and external image of La Creu de Benidorm

Espacio Público renueva la iluminación y la imagen externa de La Creu de Benidorm

Benidorm City Council, through its Department of Urban Scene, has completed the renovation of the lighting at the iconic Cruz de Benidorm, located atop Sierra Helada mountain and visible from much of the municipality.

The Cruz lighting system previously consisted of twenty 120-watt lights, which were obsolete after more than 15 years. It has now been replaced with 15 LED lights, each with a power of 61 watts. With this upgrade, explained Francis Muñoz, the Councillor for Urban Scene, "significant energy savings are achieved, along with brighter illumination that allows for better definition of the cross at night, thanks to each light's 9,000 lumens," which is the amount of visible light emitted by a light source.

The work has also involved the installation of a new electrical panel "to provide it with better insulation and greater protection against potential vandalism," Muñoz pointed out, emphasizing that after the completion of this project, "we have managed to further restore the light intensity and reduce the electricity consumption of this landmark in Benidorm, which has been a symbol of the area since 1961, by more than half."

Once the lighting renovation is finished, work is also planned for the rest of the structure. According to the councillor, a special light ochre-toned paint will be applied to protect the exterior finish. The entire base supporting La Cruz will also be painted and repaired, and the items left behind by the many people who come to enjoy the exceptional views will be removed. "Our Cruz must be shining brightly, as it is the main landmark of this area," Francis Muñoz added.

At the end of 1961, as stated on a plaque at the entrance to La Cruz, at the behest of Father Salvador Perona, the people of Benidorm, on an evangelising mission to redeem the city from its frivolous reputation, carried a huge cross on their shoulders from the Church of San Jaime and Santa Ana to the Sierra Helada mountain range. Over the years, La Cruz has become another of Benidorm's beautiful tourist attractions.
