The exhibition 'Orografía del Camino' by Manuel Outumuro (Orense, 1949) can now be visited at the Boca del Calvari Museum until April 2. Last night, Friday, the mayor of Benidorm, Toni Pérez, and the councilor for Historical and Cultural Heritage, Ana Pellicer, welcomed the artist to the city, awarded in 2022 at the Lucie Awards, considered internationally as the 'Oscar' of photography

The representative of the Photographic Social Vision Foundation, Inma Cortés, also participated in the opening ceremony of the exhibition as exhibition curator.

The regional deputy, José Ramón González de Zárate, and other members of the municipal corporation attended the first tour of the exhibition along with dozens of art and photography fans from Benidorm and other towns in the province.

Ana Pellicer addressed those present, introducing them to what they could discover on the walls of the Boca del Calvari. “An exhibition – she indicated – made up of contact sheets from enlarged photographic sessions”, which invites the public to check if the artist's choice coincides with theirs.

The councilor recalled that in traditional analog photographic processing (before the emergence of current digital cameras), the negatives "with reels of a maximum of 36 exposures", a task in which the shot was to find the desired photo, After that, they were placed on unenlarged photographic paper that, once developed, allowed us to choose the photographs that would be published, discarding those that would not.

In 'Orografía del Camino' what the visitor finds are those 'contacts', whom Pellicer encourages to value the creative's selection and to make their own choice in a series of images with popular characters from fashion, cinema, theater, song, and television.

The councilor has also stressed the importance of photography as an art, which could sometimes be called “the little sister” of other disciplines, but that “in the hands of masters like Outumuro, no one would doubt that they are great works.” of art."

Inma Cortés explained that the Photographic Social Vision deals with “historical archives” and that organizing this exhibition has involved “a whole year of work.” The photographer also thanked the City Council for the support received and recalled that this is “the third time” that they have been invited to show their creations in the city.

Following the words of the curator, Manuel Outumuro has revealed that the images exhibited in the Boca del Calvari are “commissions from fashion, publications and organizations” that were made “to satisfy a specific client” and that, at first “never” He thought they would end up in a museum.

Despite the glamor that many of the snapshots exude, the artist has claimed that he comes “from treading the mud”, remembering his childhood in the Galician mountains, long before his arrival to the great cosmopolitan city where he trained and developed his recognized and awarded work at the highest international level.
In his speech, Toni Pérez stressed that “there cannot be art without sensitivity”, highlighting Outumuro's talent and the fascination that each of his photographs exerts on those who contemplate it in a Boca del Calvari “nerve center of culture in Benidorm”.

The mayor has highlighted how sometimes “a professional commission” such as those included in the exhibition “becomes a work of art capable of fascinating the viewer” and has told Outumuro himself what his choices would have been in some of the sheets. enlarged and exposed contact areas.

Finally, Toni Pérez has contrasted the current time in which anyone “with a smartphone can feel like photographers” given the options that these devices incorporate but that, despite all the technology, “the reality is that they do not”, as It is exhibited in 'Orography of the road', an exhibition to which all citizens and those who visit the city have been invited.
